CHICAGO (JGL) – Young Filipino Americans face a mental calisthenics that would put to the test the knowledge they accumulated in and of campus that has so far molded

their impressionable minds if they join the 2019 edition of English Essay Writing Contest sponsored by the Philippine Independence Week Committee 2019. The contest will be held on May 11, 2019 (Saturday) between 10 a.m. and 12 noon at EBG Systems, Suite 324, at 3525 W. Peterson at Chicago's north side.

Ms. Josefina “Jo” P. Abaya-Wee Sit, the perennial chair of this mind-wrenching exercise since 2002, has assured philamessenger.com that “whatever is written by the essayist [in this] contest period is a product of his/her writing skills, [and] nobody's.”

Ms. Abaya-Wee Sit said contestants will only learn of the topic of the essay contest at the “start of the contest period.”

She wants to make sure that the $300 that she will cough up from her own pocket will go to the most deserving winner of the first prize. It was Pinoy Newsmagazine that first reported that Ms. Abaya-Wee Sit donated the $300 top prize for the contest.

So, if you are a current Junior up to Senior High School (7th-12th) student with Filipino heritage (at least one parent), you may step up the plate and be recognized.

Ms. Abaya-Wee Sit said the contest will be written in a computer and the topic of the essay will be announced on the spot. The topic will be known thru “lead questions and prompts that will be given to guide the contestant on what to write about.”


The essay will consist of 500 words that will use “Rubric/Scoring” that will grade the contest entry thru “Content,” “Organization,” “Style and Clarity” and “Mechanics and Format.”

Contest winners will be awarded their prizes during the PIWC Gala Night/Dinner Ball on June 15, 2019 (Saturday) at the Holiday Inn & Suites Chicago North Shore (5300 W. Touhy Ave., Skokie, IL).

Aside from the first prize of $300, the second prize winner will get $250, the third prize, $200, the fourth prize, $150, and the fifth prize, $100. Each winner will be given a complimentary Gala night dinner ticket.

All participating essayists will receive a $20 bonus on the contest day.

Winning essays will be printed in the PIWC Gala Night/Dinner Ball souvenir program.

Among the required information needed for each contestant are the names, dates of birth, current residential addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, parents/guardians, school, grade/year level and availability of laptop computers. A contestant, who does not have laptop computer, should say so and he/she will be provided with one.
