“Full Steam Ahead” into the future
By Mary Graybill
TAIPEI, Taiwan (Sept. 7, 2018) – EVA Air parent company, Evergreen Group, celebrated its 50th Anniversary last Sept. 1st at the Chang Yung-Fa Foundation, home of the nonprofit set
up by Evergreen Group Founder and Chairman Dr. Y.F. Chang. In addition to senior executives and employees of the Group’s businesses, public officials, customers and business agents from both the shipping and airline industries as well as representatives of supply chain partners from more than fifty countries joined in the celebration.
Taiwan’s Minister of Transportation and Communications Wu Hong-Mo commended Evergreen Group for building far-reaching international shipping and flight networks, providing quality transportation services that facilitate world trade and serving the public. Evergreen Group also makes it a priority to support charitable activities and give back to society.
Mr. K.H. Chang of Evergreen International Corp. thanked business partners and all employees for working closely with Evergreen Group over the last 50 years and expressed the company’s gratitude to the public for the support and encouragement that helped spur the company to achieve the scale of business it enjoys today. He encouraged Evergreen staff to remain true to Dr. Chang’s values and work together to achieve the next milestone, an Evergreen Group centennial anniversary.

Evergreen created a special banner for the celebration to symbolize gratitude for past successes and expectations for a more prosperous future. Green waves cross a 50th anniversary insignia with rhythmic lines to suggest the magnificent energy of the ocean and symbolize Evergreen’s repeated breakthroughs and innovative achievements. A compass represents Dr. Chang’s corporate philosophy of leading employees to uphold the company’s values as they work together to overcome obstacles and sail full-steam ahead into the future. Pulsating orbs signify the vitality of the businesses that operate under the Evergreen Group umbrella.
Evergreen Group evolved from marine transportation. Dr. Chang established Evergreen Marine Corporation on September 1, 1968. In the early years, the company faced huge obstacles such as a fire that ravaged Ever Island, a lack of lending support from financial institutions and the competitive monopoly created by freight conferences. Under Dr. Chang’s leadership and with employees’ “Evergreen Spirit,” the global shipping line overcame those hurdles and more.
In 1972, Evergreen launched Taiwan’s first Far East-Middle East liner service, helping local shippers transport cargo to the fast-developing Middle East region. In 1979, as an independent carrier, it opened the Far East to full container service from Europe, breaking the Far Eastern Freight Conference’s monopoly. In 1984, Evergreen launched unprecedented two-way, round-the-world container services. This service made global marine transportation history and, by 1985, established Evergreen as the world's largest container shipping line. Today, Evergreen remains one of the global shipping industry’s leading lines.
EXTENDS INTO AIRLINE INDUSTRY
After building a solid foundation in shipping, Dr. Chang extended Evergreen’s transportation experience into the airline industry. On Evergreen Marine’s 20th anniversary, he announced plans to invest and build the first privately owned airline in Taiwan, EVA Air.
“Although it will not be possible for EVA Air to grow to be the biggest airline in the world due to air traffic rights restrictions, the airline will follow Evergreen Marine’s shipping industry example and become one of the safest and best carriers in the world,” Dr. Chang said.
Dr. Chang made a huge investment in establishing EVA, building a training center and maintenance facilities and purchasing advanced software systems to ensure that the airline’s flight safety and service quality met the highest standards. Dr. Chang’s leadership and the “Evergreen Spirit” again enabled a fledgling company to overcome difficulties, including smear campaigns. EVA took to the sky in 1991. After just a few years, EVA expanded its route network to serve major cities throughout Asia and in Europe, North America and Australia. EVA successfully grew its services at a pace that was rare for a newly-established airline at the time.
The airline owes much of its success to Evergreen Group’s transportation experience. The skilled employees who provided the professional talents EVA needed during its formative years all transferred from Evergreen Marine. Evergreen Marine’s business relationships and economic contributions to different countries also helped EVA acquire air traffic rights. Today, EVA is among the world’s leading international airlines and repeatedly wins awards and recognition for flight safety and service quality.
